Target group analysis of young people’s leisure activities and interests
Background
FO-Aarhus wanted to strengthen its relevance to young people in Aarhus through a more flexible and engaging leisure programme.
To gain a deeper understanding of young people’s wishes, behavior and barriers in relation to leisure activities, FO-Aarhus asked Silverlining Research to conduct a target group analysis among young people in Jutland. The study is based on a questionnaire survey with 305 respondents and was conducted in May 2025.
Method
The analysis is based on questionnaire data from a representative sample of young people aged 16-30 and covers: Their actual participation in leisure activities, Areas of interest and motivation for participation, Barriers and financial considerations, and Practical preferences for format, time and transport.
Results
The study shows that young people in Aarhus are very interested in leisure activities, especially physical movement, but also creative and social formats such as cooking, crafts and music. However, participation is highly dependent on practical factors: time, finances and the opportunity to join others. They prefer short, manageable programmes close to their everyday life and will typically participate weekly.
The results indicate that there is great potential to engage young people if activities are designed with flexibility, community and accessibility in mind.
